Kolkata International Film Festival suspended, more celebrities test positive
The day after the organizers decided to go ahead with the Kolkata International Film Festival by limiting the capacity of its screening rooms to 50%, the state government on Wednesday suspended the event in citing the massive increase in Covid-19 cases across the state.
After assessing the current Covid situation, the state government issued a statement indicating that the event, which was scheduled to take place January 7-14, has been temporarily postponed. â(The) next festival date will be communicated in due course. Many cinema personalities attached to the film festival committee and many others have
been affected by the Covid â, we read in the press release issued by the government.
Meanwhile, actor Parambrata Chatterjee, who is one of the members of the event’s organizing committee, reported on
Twitter that he had tested positive for the new coronavirus.
“Had mild symptoms in Mumbai on the 27th but tested negative. Returned to Kolkata on the 30th. I became completely asymptomatic on the 2nd but still had a routine test the day before, the results have arrived now and it’s positive.
I’ll test again in three days, âthe actor tweeted.
Flimmaker Raj Chakraborty, MP for Trinamool and chairman of the event’s organizing committee, had previously tested positive along with his wife, actress Subhasree Chakraborty.
Actors who became Trinamool deputies Dev Adhikari and Mimi Chakraborty have also been detected with Covid-19. The first is currently in home isolation.
Sana Ganguly, the daughter of the chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, has also tested positive for the virus. It is, however, asymptomatic.
